Mac app crashes on launch after a macOS update

An app that quits unexpectedly the moment you open it, right after a macOS update, is usually an old build that no longer matches the system. The order you try things in matters.

What that means

Low risk. This fix only checks things, or changes settings you can switch back in the same place. This change is reversible — you can return to the previous state without professional help or data loss.

The Mac console crash report list with the newest report's top lines read for the terminating framework, older reports ignored

What usually goes wrong

  • Move the preference file to the Desktop instead of deleting it, so you can put it back if the crash turns out to be something else.
  • Take nothing else out of ~/Library while you are in there, because that folder holds live app data and there is no undo.

Steps

How to verify the fix

The app opens and stays open through normal use, and Console records no new crash report for it.

If this didn't fix it

If the developer has not shipped a compatible build yet, check their support page rather than reinstalling repeatedly — some apps simply need the next release. If several unrelated apps crash on launch after the same update, the update is the problem rather than the apps.
