What that means

Steps

- Settings → Personalisation → Colours → turn off 'Transparency effects' — removes the blur behind the Start menu, taskbar and Action Center

- Settings → Accessibility → Visual effects → turn off 'Animation effects' to stop window-open and taskbar animations

- For the biggest jump: WinR → sysdm.cpl → Advanced tab → Performance → Settings → 'Adjust for best performance' — disables every visual effect at once, including shadows and font smoothing

- If it looks too plain afterwards, switch that same dialog to 'Custom' and re-tick individual effects (like 'Smooth edges of screen fonts') you want back

- While you're in there, the same Colours page sets an accent colour, and right-click the taskbar → Taskbar settings lets you centre it or stop it combining buttons — a cleaner look for no performance cost

- The win is bigger the weaker your GPU is — integrated graphics feel this more than a modern discrete card

How to verify the fix

Transparency and animations are visibly off in Settings, and the UI feels snappier on modest hardware.

If this didn't fix it

No perceptible speed change — turn the effects back on if you prefer the look (Settings → Personalisation).
