What that means

Low risk. This fix only checks things, or changes settings you can switch back in the same place. This change is reversible — you can return to the previous state without professional help or data loss.

Siri & Spotlight's privacy list with an external HDD and backup drive excluded from indexing while the main drive stays indexed, plus a remove-and-re-add trick for stale results

Steps

How to verify the fix

The disk activity light goes quiet on the excluded drives, and Spotlight still finds files on your main drive instantly.

If this didn't fix it

Search results feel stale or missing — re-add the main drive to Spotlight Privacy to force a clean rebuild.
