Think your PC has a virus? Scan it properly
A PC that has turned slow, shows odd pop-ups or gave you a warning you are not sure about can be checked with the scanner already built into Windows. Run the full scan, then the offline scan, then read what they found.

What that means
Low risk. This fix only checks things, or changes settings you can switch back in the same place. This change is reversible — you can return to the previous state without professional help or data loss.
Steps
-
See which antivirus is in charge
Why?
Microsoft's wording: if you install a compatible non-Microsoft antivirus, Microsoft Defender Antivirus turns itself off automatically. That is by design, not a sign of trouble.
-
Update Windows, then run a full scan
You should see: A result when it finishes: either nothing found, or a list of what was found and what was done about it.
Why?
Microsoft describes a full scan as one that 'scans every file and program on your device', which is why it takes far longer than the quick scan.
-
Run Microsoft Defender Offline
This scan runs after a restart, before Windows loads, so anything that hides while Windows is running has a harder time doing so
You should see: The PC back at the normal sign-in screen without you doing anything.
-
Read Protection history
Careful: Choose 'Allow on device' or 'Restore' only when you are certain the file is one you trust and Windows has made a mistake. If you are not sure, leave it quarantined — nothing breaks while you find out.
Why?
Protection history keeps events for two weeks, so read it soon after the scan. Red marks something serious; yellow marks something to look at when you can.
-
If it found something, follow up
How to verify the fix
A full scan and an offline scan both finish with nothing found, and Protection history shows no entry still waiting for a decision.
If this didn't fix it
Get professional help, or plan a reset, if the same threat comes back after you remove it, if 'Remediation incomplete' will not clear, if Windows Security will not open or keeps switching itself off, or if the PC still behaves oddly after two clean scans. The UK's National Cyber Security Centre says that when antivirus cannot fix a PC, the answer is to wipe it and reinstall Windows, then restore your files from a backup made before the trouble started. A scan that finds nothing is good evidence, not proof.
