What that means

Steps

- The category list (Applications, Documents, System Data, iCloud Drive, Messages) shows where the space actually went — start with whichever is largest, not the one you assume

- Turn on 'Optimise Storage' so watched movies and shows in the TV app get evicted automatically once seen, and old Mail attachments download on demand instead of staying local

- Turn on 'Empty Trash Automatically' so deleted files clear out after 30 days instead of sitting in the Trash indefinitely

- Click into Applications and sort by size — remove anything unopened in months; large creative or dev tools are often the biggest single recoverable chunk

- 'System Data' is mostly caches and logs macOS manages itself — it's normal for it to stay large; don't try to manually delete inside it

How to verify the fix

System Settings → General → Storage (Monterey and earlier: About This Mac → Storage tab) shows meaningful free space and Optimise Storage is switched on.

If this didn't fix it

Storage still nearly full after cleanup — the large items are in apps or iCloud you haven't reviewed yet.
